Calculating Your True Profit Margin as a Meesho Seller

The profit shown on the Meesho Seller Panel is not your real profit. This guide walks through the full cost stack and shows, with numbers, how to calculate true net margin per SKU.

Most Meesho sellers calculate profit one of two ways. Either they look at the settlement amount and treat it as profit, or they subtract product cost from settlement and call that profit. Both are wrong. Here is what true net margin actually looks like, with a worked example.

The full cost stack

For any sub-order, these are the real costs:

  1. COGS (Cost of Goods Sold). What you paid your supplier for one unit of the product. The most obvious cost, and still the one most sellers under-track because they mix average price with last-purchased price.
  2. Packaging cost. Poly bag, bubble wrap, invoice, label, any inner cushioning. Small per unit, large in aggregate.
  3. Platform commission. Already netted out in the settlement amount. You see it but you do not pay it again.
  4. Forward shipping. Billed by Meesho on dispatch. Already deducted from settlement.
  5. RTO charges. On the delivered order itself, zero. But you allocate a blended RTO cost per delivered unit to reflect the RTO rate of the SKU.
  6. Return / exchange handling. If a buyer returns a delivered order, the return journey plus the condition of the returned unit is a cost. Similar blended allocation.
  7. Overhead. Warehouse rent, your own time, courier pickup fees, electricity, software. Allocate per order as a small constant.
  8. Tax. GST on commission, income tax on profit. Keep for end-of-year, but know the effective rate so your pricing is not naive.

Three kinds of margin, three different stories

"Margin" is a slippery word. There are really three, and they tell different stories.

1. Gross margin

Settlement amount minus COGS, divided by settlement amount. Ignores everything except what you paid for the product. Only useful for product-level conversations with your supplier.

2. Contribution margin

Settlement minus COGS, packaging, and an allocated RTO/return cost, divided by settlement. This is the margin that tells you whether the SKU contributes positively to the business, i.e. whether running the SKU is better than not running it. Most important decision metric.

3. Net margin

Contribution margin minus allocated overhead, divided by settlement. This is the final profit-after-everything margin. Use it for business-level decisions about scaling and pricing.

A worked example

Let us walk through a single sub-order for a hypothetical garment SKU.

On a ₹549 listed-price sale:

  • Settlement = ₹456 (83% of listed)
  • Gross margin = ₹264 (58% of settlement)
  • Contribution margin = ₹216 (47% of settlement)
  • Net margin = ₹196 (43% of settlement, 35% of listed)

The seller who stops at "settlement ₹456, COGS ₹180, profit ₹276" is overestimating real net profit by ₹80 per order. Scale that over a month of a thousand units and the miscalculation is ₹80,000.

The RTO allocation shortcut

Allocating RTO per delivered unit is the step most sellers skip. Here is a clean way to do it for each SKU:

Recalculate every cycle. RTO rates shift with weather, season, campaigns, and image quality changes. A SKU that was breaking even in March can be bleeding money by June if RTO crept up and you did not re-allocate.

What benchmarks look like

Very rough, category-dependent benchmarks for sustainable Meesho SKUs:

  • Fashion / apparel: aim for 18–28 percent net margin after RTO allocation. Below 15 percent, the SKU is fragile.
  • Home & kitchen: 20–35 percent net margin is achievable with low-return SKUs.
  • Accessories / small goods: 25–40 percent net margin, driven by small packaging and shipping cost.
  • Electronics / heavier goods: 8–15 percent net margin, with shipping and RTO eating a bigger slice.

Calibrate these to your own supplier costs. They are directional.

The decisions this number unlocks

Once you know true net margin per SKU, the decisions get obvious:

  • Kill the losers. Any SKU with negative contribution margin is losing you money every time it ships. Delist or reprice.
  • Double-down on the winners. Concentrate inventory, ad spend, and catalogue energy on the top 20 percent by contribution margin.
  • Negotiate smarter. Knowing which SKUs absorb the most RTO lets you go back to your supplier with specific unit-cost asks.
  • Price with intent. A 10-rupee price increase that removes 2 percentage points of RTO rate is almost always accretive.
